Although tuna are a possible catch anytime the Gail
Force is offshore trolling, to specifically target these fish
you need to go where they live, deep water oil rigs or simply
put 'the rigs'. Captain John prefers making 'rig trips' during
the months of October-December when the tuna are thick and the
fishing pressure is thin. The rigs are approximately 100 miles
from port so rig trips are generally 24 hour endeavors departing
and returning at mid-day. Tuna can be incredibly hard to get to
bite no matter how thick they seem to be. For this reason Captain
John employs night fishing techniques to ensure his anglers their
best opportunity to catch one of these fine fish. Generally the
targeted yellowfin tuna caught around the rigs run in the 40-80
pound range with an occasional big one over one hundred pounds,
and there is always plenty of action from the smaller 10-20 pound
blackfin tunas. Rig trips for tuna offer other big game opportunities
as well. Swordfish can
be caught while night fishing and marlin, wahoo and mahi are all
possibilities while trolling at first light. Captain John also
has some super duper deep water bottom fishing spots located on
the way home in case there is any room left in the fish boxes.
